Social Media 101

With all the talk about social media these days it can be overwhelming to say the least. It encompasses everything from Twitter and Facebook to Second Life, podcasts and WOW (World of Warcraft ). In this section you will learn about many of the tools, tricks and tactics of social media.

Following is a list of most of the major categories of social media and a quick description about them. To get more in-depth information simply click the category link you are interested in.

Social Networking:

One main area of social media is social networking. This section covers websites like Facebook, LinkedIn, Myspace, Bebo, FastPitch and many many more. On these sites you can literally build your network (hence the name networking) by engaging in conversations, forums, groups and more. Basically, building a relationship with the people around you. Most of the remaining social media categories feed into this (and a couple other) categories  to help you build a list, target market and/or network in which you add value to.

Microblogging:

Microblogging, as you most likely know, is basically a blog, but one where you can only post updates that are 140 characters or less. This can be beneficial in starting conversations or getting people to want to know more by clicking on your link. The most popular and well known microblog is Twitter. Others are Status, Trillr, I Did Work, Present.ly and more.
